About PlayStation
Developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the PlayStation series includes the PS4 and PS5 consoles, known for their extensive libraries and online capabilities.
New One-Time Online Check
Sony has confirmed the introduction of a new one-time online check for digital PlayStation games. According to Sony, "Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required after purchase to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are needed." This means that once players complete the initial check, they can play offline without additional validation.
However, newly bought PlayStation 4 games will come with a 30-day license, accompanied by a countdown timer. If players do not perform the online check within this period, access to the game will be revoked. This sudden DRM implementation has raised concerns among players about the potential requirement for regular internet connectivity to retain access to purchased games.
License Details and Refund Policy
The 30-day license is critical for maintaining access to games. If players connect online within 15 days of purchase, their limited offline license will transition into an indefinite offline license. This change seems aimed at addressing refund exploits, as players have a 14-day window for requesting refunds on PlayStation games, although Sony has not confirmed this reasoning.
Community Concerns and the CBOMB Issue
Despite the reassurance from Sony, the company has not addressed the ongoing concerns related to the "CBOMB" issue. Players have discovered that if a PlayStation's CMOS battery dies, it becomes impossible to validate the online license required for accessing new games. This is particularly troubling for future support, as consoles may eventually lose access to online services, similar to what happened with the PS3.
As the gaming community continues to voice its concerns, the long-term ramifications of the one-time DRM and the unresolved CBOMB issue remain uncertain. Players must consider the implications of this new system, especially regarding future access to their digital libraries.
