This unique podcast started on the BBC and is now independently crowd-funded, recently launching its latest series, Crowley. A Unique Approach
Initially intended as a single season, Simpson notes that the series found new life after the success of podcasts like Serial. “It was such a punt by the BBC,” he shared in a recent interview. Yet, the demand for more content led to the commissioning of a second season, which kicked off a whole new mystery involving The Whisperer in Darkness.
In Simpson’s adaptation, the story unfolds in Suffolk, England, where Heawood and Fisher discover a murder board linked to Henry Akeley, a character from Lovecraft’s original tale. This twist interconnects various storylines, bringing in elements from earlier episodes and revealing a complex universe of mysteries.
The Pleasant Green Universe
Simpson’s creative vision expanded into what he calls the Pleasant Green universe, an interconnected web of his previous works. This includes a drama about a secret British government agency investigating mystical anomalies. Familiar characters reappear, and the narrative threads begin to align, enriching the overall experience for dedicated listeners.
The character of Eleanor Peck, played by Nicola Walker, has garnered a significant fanbase. With her sharp skepticism and witty observations, she provides a grounding perspective amid the chaos of Lovecraftian horror. “It’s all bollocks,” her catchphrase, captures her disdain for the mystical elements, much to the delight of listeners.
