The beloved PlayStation Portable exclusive Fate/Extra is making a highly anticipated return in 2025 with a full remake titled Fate/Extra Record. Bandai Namco unveiled the first trailer for this RPG, coinciding with the 14th anniversary of the original game’s release.
Fate/Extra Record Gets Release Window and First Trailer
Fate/Extra, a dungeon-crawling RPG within the expansive Fate series, was initially developed by Type-Moon and Imageepoch. The game is set in an alternate universe from the Fate/Stay Night visual novel. First released in Japan in July 2010 by Marvelous Entertainment, it reached North America and Europe with English localizations in November 2011 and May 2012, respectively. In 2020, Bandai Namco announced that Type-Moon Studio BB would helm the remake project, officially titled Fate/Extra Record.
Four years later, fans finally received a glimpse of what’s to come. At FGO Fest 2024 on August 4, Bandai Namco showcased a two-minute reveal trailer. The trailer highlights several story elements and provides a sneak peek into the game’s combat and exploration mechanics. The clip concludes with a 2025 release window. Currently, Fate/Extra Record is set to launch exclusively in Japan, though a Western release remains a possibility given Bandai Namco’s involvement, which differs from Type-Moon’s usual practice of self-publishing in Japan.
Gameplay and Reception of the Original
The original Fate/Extra garnered positive reviews for its unique blend of dungeon-crawling and visual novel-style storytelling. Critics particularly appreciated the game’s integration of school life elements. While some aspects might remind players of the Persona series, Fate/Extra distinguishes itself through its combat system, which centers on predicting enemy moves rather than exploiting weaknesses for additional actions. Additionally, it lacks Persona’s Social Link system, focusing instead on its narrative and combat.
Given its reputation as one of the best PSP-exclusive RPGs, the remake’s announcement is thrilling news for genre enthusiasts. Bandai Namco has confirmed that Fate/Extra Record will be available on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC, expanding its reach beyond the original PSP platform.
Potential for Future Releases
Fate/Extra’s 2010 debut was followed by Fate/Extra CCC in 2013, described by Type-Moon as a “companion game” rather than a direct sequel. Fate/Extra CCC remained a Japan-exclusive title. Should Fate/Extra Record prove successful, there is potential for a remake of Fate/Extra CCC, which would be eagerly anticipated by fans.
Final Thoughts
The return of Fate/Extra in the form of Fate/Extra Record marks a significant moment for fans of the Fate series and RPG enthusiasts. With its confirmed platforms and a promising first look through the trailer, anticipation is building for the 2025 release. Whether or not it will see an international launch remains to be seen, but the involvement of Bandai Namco is a hopeful sign for a global audience.
