Since its official release on June 2, 2020, Riot Games’ free-to-play first-person tactical hero shooter, Valorant, has captivated a global player base. A consistent flow of new agents and maps has maintained the game’s allure. Today, we delve into each of the maps that have been made available in Valorant as of 2023.
The Evolution of Valorant’s Map Roster
Initially launched with just four maps, Valorant has seen this number grow considerably over the years. Each map is unique and designed to test a variety of skills. Riot Games describes their maps as playgrounds for “team strategies, spectacular plays, and clutch moments.” Moreover, every map is based on a real-world location, adding an extra layer of immersion to the gameplay.
As of now, there are ten main playable maps along with a practice map known as The Range. Here is a detailed analysis of each map:
Ascent
Ascent holds historical significance as one of the first maps around which much of Valorant’s core gameplay was developed. Set in San Marco, Venice, it contains two plant sites A and B, with an open mid area for long-range combat.
Bind
Bind was also part of Valorant’s closed beta release. This map takes place in Rabat, Morocco, and uniquely offers no middle ground—only two direct paths for attackers. Its one-way teleporters add an interesting dynamic to the gameplay. It is available in both unrated and ranked modes.
Split
Located in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, Split features two sites and uses rope ascenders for vertical movement. It was among the initial four maps and remains popular due to its balanced layout and vertical gameplay elements.
Haven
Unique for having three sites, Haven is set in Thimphu, Bhutan. The map is large and requires careful planning and team coordination. A fun tidbit: a poster advertising another map, Breeze, can be found in the A-site Tower.
Icebox
Icebox is set in Bennett Island, Russia, and was the first to introduce horizontal ziplines. The map is complex and offers a challenging terrain that demands a good understanding of cover and verticality.
Breeze
Breeze, set in the Bermuda Triangle, features wide-open spaces for long-range combat. It contains unique features like mechanical doors and one-way automatic chutes. It has been subject to various updates to improve gameplay.
Fracture
Situated in New Mexico, Fracture is a top-secret research facility divided into four neutral quadrants. This design radically changes the gameplay and strategies that teams can employ.
Pearl
Set in Lisbon, Portugal, Pearl is a straightforward map with a three-lane setup. It lacks any dynamic elements, making it a favorite among those who prefer uncomplicated gameplay.
Lotus
Lotus takes place in the Western Ghats of India and encapsulates an ancient temple ambiance. It also offers three plant sites, similar to Haven, and features unique elements like a 400 HP destructible wall.
Sunset
The latest addition, Sunset is set in Los Angeles, California. It has traditional features, including two sites, and is the only map with 500 HP irreversible bomb doors.
