MintRocket, known for the indie sensation Dave the Diver, has recently unveiled its next project, Wakerunners, marking a significant genre shift. This move showcases the developer’s ambition to explore a wide range of gaming genres.
From Whimsical Adventure to PvP Battler:
Dave the Diver, released in mid-2023, was a whimsical, pixel-based adventure game that achieved viral success. This success was somewhat overshadowed by a controversy when it was revealed that MintRocket is a subsidiary of Nexon, leading to debates over its nomination for Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2023. Despite not winning, the game’s popularity has not waned.
Wakerunners: A New Challenge:
Wakerunners, a team-based PvP arena battler set in a dystopian sci-fi world, represents a stark contrast to Dave the Diver. Developed by a different internal team at MintRocket, it signifies the studio’s diverse creative directions. The game is set to debut a demo during Steam Next Fest in early February, giving players an early glimpse into its gameplay.
Wakerunners Gameplay and Features:
The demo, according to a PC Gamer interview, will feature seven characters and five game modes, with team sizes varying based on the mode. Each match is designed to be around 10 minutes, focusing more on individual character fun than team cooperation. Character flexibility and cosmetic customization are key features, enhancing the player experience.
Diversification in MintRocket’s Portfolio:
MintRocket’s venture into diverse genres is further exemplified by its second project, Nakwon: Lost Paradise. This survival extraction game set during a zombie apocalypse offers a 16-player third-person PvPvE experience. Here, players will scavenge for resources while combating zombies, relying heavily on stealth and melee combat, adding a thrilling edge of permadeath.
Final Thoughts:
MintRocket’s foray into different gaming genres demonstrates the dynamic nature of the gaming industry and the potential for developers to continually innovate and surprise their audience. From the charm of Dave the Diver to the intense competition of Wakerunners and the survival challenges of Nakwon: Lost Paradise, MintRocket is proving its versatility and commitment to delivering diverse gaming experiences.
