Glen Schofield, the director of The Callisto Protocol, has revealed that the game was forced to launch earlier than planned due to the insistence of its parent company, Krafton. This decision significantly impacted the development process and led to the omission of several key elements from the final release.
Accelerated Development and Cut Content
In a recent interview with Dan Allen Gaming, Schofield discussed how Krafton’s decision affected the game’s development. Initially, Krafton allowed Striking Distance Studios to freely incorporate their ideas into The Callisto Protocol and even promised additional development time. However, this promise was retracted, and the studio was suddenly pressured to release the game by December 2022.
Schofield had envisioned three and a half more months of development, which would have pushed the release into 2023. He explained, “It’s not like it costs you less money because you’re getting it out three months sooner. If I’d just kept it on the way it was going, I wouldn’t have to add anybody. But if you want it done, that means I’ve got to accelerate everything by three and a half months, which means I need to jam people on here.”
Due to this rushed timeline, four bosses and two enemy types were ultimately cut from the game. This acceleration not only strained the development team but also affected the game’s overall quality.
Vision for a Sequel
Although Schofield left Striking Distance in 2023, he shared his vision for a potential sequel to The Callisto Protocol. His concept involved introducing a new protagonist at the beginning of the game, only to have this character killed off halfway through. Jacob, the protagonist from the first game, would then make a surprise return to continue the story.
Post-Release Challenges
Following the release of The Callisto Protocol, Striking Distance Studios faced additional challenges. In August 2023, the studio laid off over 30 developers, just after releasing the game’s final story DLC in June. These layoffs further highlight the turbulent development and post-launch period for the game.
Critical Reception
The Callisto Protocol received mixed reviews upon release. GameSpot’s review noted, “Though it starts off on a strong note, The Callisto Protocol’s focus on action-heavy spectacles fails to adequately explore its horror and overcrowds its weak combat mechanics.” The early release and resulting cut content likely contributed to these criticisms.
