New Hero Ban System on the Horizon

Overwatch’s upcoming changes to the hero ban system could shake up competitive play significantly. Players may soon have the ability to ban a fifth hero, allowing for more strategic options and addressing player frustrations with the current limits.

Current Ban Restrictions

Introduced in Season 16, the hero ban system allows teams to ban a maximum of four heroes per match, two from each team. Players rank their top three bans, and the heroes with the most votes receive higher chances of being eliminated from play. However, this method often leads to disagreements among team members, resulting in missed bans.

Improving Team Communication

Associate game director Alec Dawson highlighted the need for improvements in a recent blog post. “We believe there is room to help you make more informed bans,” he stated. The team recognizes that the current system doesn’t always reflect players' preferences and is evaluating ways to enhance the information shared during the ban process.

Introducing Lobby Bans

The proposed Lobby Ban could allow players to ignore the role-limit rule when deciding on bans. This would enable all votes from both teams to contribute to a final ban, potentially resolving some of the issues with the existing system. “This can happen when a hero that got a lot of votes on your side wasn’t banned, either because it ran into the role-limit rule or another choice barely edged it out,” Dawson explained.

Player Feedback and Future Changes

With a large portion of the player base typically targeting the same heroes for bans, this adjustment could streamline decision-making and improve overall gameplay experience. More discussion time for hero bans might also lead to better team compositions—if players utilize that time effectively, of course.

Looking Ahead

The reworked hero ban system represents a significant step towards enhancing player strategy in Overwatch. As the developers gather feedback and refine these changes, there’s hope that players will experience a more balanced and enjoyable competitive environment. The future of team dynamics in Overwatch might just be a few bans away from a refresh.
