Recent Layoffs at Take-Two
Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, has seemingly laid off its head of AI, Luke Dicken, along with several team members. This move comes amid growing concerns about the viability of artificial intelligence in game development.
Dicken shared the news on his LinkedIn profile, expressing disappointment over the end of his tenure at Take-Two. He wrote, "It’s truly disappointing that I have to share with you that my time with T2 - and that of my team - has come to an end." He also highlighted the team's efforts in developing cutting-edge technology for game development over the past seven years.
The layoffs raise eyebrows, especially given the ongoing discussions in the industry about the effectiveness of generative AI. Just last month, Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick voiced skepticism regarding the implementation of such tools, stating, "These tools may help you create assets, but that won’t help you create hits." Zelnick’s comments reflect a broader caution within the industry regarding AI's actual impact on game success.
Interestingly, only a few months ago, Zelnick expressed enthusiasm about generative AI, describing Take-Two as a leader in the space. This abrupt shift in tone may indicate that the company is reassessing its approach to AI integration in light of recent developments.
With the gaming landscape evolving, the layoffs may signify that Take-Two is questioning the sustainability of its AI initiatives. The recent shutdown of OpenAI's video generation app, Sora, and the cancellation of its $1 billion partnership with Disney could further influence the company’s strategy.
Despite the layoffs, it’s unlikely that this marks the end of AI projects at Take-Two. The company has previously indicated that it has "hundreds" of AI pilots and implementations underway, suggesting that the focus may shift rather than disappear altogether.
