Activision has recently commenced the Open Beta phase for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. With this milestone, we felt it pertinent to conduct an initial performance analysis. The focus is on how well the game runs on a high-end PC configuration, especially with NVIDIA’s latest graphics card, the RTX 4090.

Hardware and Software Specifications

For this performance test, the system used included an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor, 32GB of DDR5 memory running at 6000Mhz, and NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 graphics card. Additionally, the computer ran on a Windows 10 64-bit operating system with the GeForce 537.58 driver. It’s noteworthy that we disabled the second CCD on our 7950X3D processor.

Benchmark Settings and Performance Metrics

The game was tested at Native 4K resolution with maximum settings. In this configuration, the RTX 4090 performed exceptionally well, maintaining framerates well above 120fps. Interestingly, the Ground War mode, despite supporting up to 64 players in large environments, was less demanding on the system than Domination mode, which supports 16 players in smaller environments.

Shader Compilation and Stability

One important aspect to note is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 compiles its shaders the first time it launches. This means that shader compilation stutters, commonly experienced in other games, were not present. Furthermore, no traversal stutters were observed, even in the large-scale Ground War mode, and the game overall showed no stability issues.

Graphics Technologies Support

The current version of the Open Beta supports NVIDIA DLSS 2 and AMD FSR 2.1. While DLSS 3 is not currently supported, Activision has confirmed that the final release will include this feature. Our preliminary recommendation is to use DLSS 3 for the single-player campaign but to opt for NVIDIA Reflex when playing online.

Aesthetic Impressions

Despite the absence of Ray Tracing effects in the Open Beta, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues to adhere to the visual standards of the series. Although Ray Tracing could enhance the graphical capabilities, the game, as it stands, does not push the boundaries of multiplayer first-person shooter games in terms of graphical fidelity.

Release Date and Upcoming Analysis

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be officially released on November 10th. Our subsequent performance analysis will delve into the single-player campaign, which is expected to be more hardware-intensive compared to the multiplayer modes.

Final Thoughts

This initial analysis indicates that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 performs admirably on high-end systems, specifically when equipped with NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 graphics card. It remains to be seen how the game will fare upon its full release, particularly with the addition of DLSS 3 support. However, as of now, the title shows promise in terms of both performance and stability.
