Starfield has quickly become a favorite among space exploration enthusiasts for its intricate missions and complex decision-making. One mission that players should not overlook is Walter Stroud’s side mission, named “Overdesigned.” This mission not only presents the player with challenging decisions but also offers a free ship as a reward. The process, however, isn’t straightforward, as players will need to lead a project to design the new ship. This guide provides an in-depth walkthrough of the Overdesigned mission to help you secure the best ship available.

1. Initiate the Mission with Walter Stroud

To kickstart the mission, head back to The Lodge if you’re not already there. Locate Walter Stroud and engage him in conversation. Opt for the dialogue option, “I was wondering if you had any more work for me.” Walter will elaborate on the challenges he’s facing with his research and development team, which is indecisive about the next new ship for Stroud-Eklund. Impressed by your capabilities, Walter will ask you to lead the project and make the final decisions.

2. Visit Stroud-Eklund Staryard

Your next objective is to travel to the Stroud-Eklund Staryard. Use the fast travel option in your system menu to reach the planet Deepala in the Nairon System. Upon arrival, you will find the Staryard in orbit. Navigate towards it and dock when prompted. Board the Staryard once you are fully docked.

3. Consult with Jules

Upon setting foot in the Stroud-Eklund Staryard, proceed down the corridor and take a left through the double doors leading to a meeting room. Here you’ll find Jules along with other members of the R&D team. Jules will initiate a conversation regarding the budget for the new ship. You have two options: go for a sensible budget that results in the Kepler S ship or opt for the ‘kitchen sink’ budget leading to the Kepler R. For the latter, make use of your Persuasion skill to secure the higher budget, as merely asking will not suffice.

4. (Optional) Team Proposals Feedback

While optional, this part of the mission allows you to influence the outcome. Discuss the project proposals with the R&D team. Your critique will affect whether the team leans towards the Kepler S or the Kepler R ship. Positive feedback will steer the project towards the more advanced Kepler R.

5. Market Research with Jules

Irrespective of your choice to engage in the optional task, the next step involves talking to Jules about market research. You are asked to undertake one or two missions to gather data. Completing just one of these missions is sufficient for progressing in the mission.

6. Execute a Passenger or Bounty Mission

Navigate to the mission board located in the Stroud-Eklund Staryard lobby. From here, you can select either a cargo mission or a combat-based mission. Depending on your ship’s capabilities, undertake one or both missions. Once completed, return to the Staryard.

7. Final Consultation with Jules

Report back to Jules, who will pose one final question for you to answer. Depending on your preference between the Kepler S and Kepler R, respond accordingly. For the Kepler S, suggest that each team member compromises on one idea. For the Kepler R, propose a group meditation session to foster team building.

8. Report Back to Walter

Travel back to The Lodge in New Atlantis and update Walter Stroud on the project’s status. He will express his gratitude and reward you with the new ship from the Stroud-Eklund fleet. Depending on your choices, you’ll either receive the class B Kepler S or the class C Kepler R ship.

Technical Requirements

Note that flying the Kepler S necessitates a level 3 Piloting skill, while the Kepler R requires a level 4 Piloting skill.

Final Thoughts

The Overdesigned mission in Starfield offers not only a compelling narrative but also a tangible reward in the form of a new ship. By meticulously following the steps outlined above, players can ensure that they secure the best ship on offer.
