About Xbox

Xbox is developed by Universal Studios Hollywood Hub and available on Xbox Series X and PC. The platform has faced significant financial challenges recently, prompting a reevaluation of its strategies.

Changes in Leadership and Strategy

Asha Sharma, named boss of Xbox in February, has recognized the financial struggles of Microsoft’s gaming division. The gaming revenue decreased by 7%, while Xbox content and services revenue fell by 5%, and Xbox hardware revenue saw a staggering decline of 33%. In response to these challenges, Sharma has ended the controversial ‘This is an Xbox’ marketing campaign and suggested that Xbox exclusives may return, reflecting a shift towards serving core fans better.

New Priorities for Xbox

Sharma and Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty outlined new objectives for the team. These include a reevaluation of exclusivity, a focus on affordability, and evolving third-party partnerships. The team acknowledged that new feature drops on the console have been less frequent, and their presence on PC is not strong enough. Additionally, they noted that pricing is becoming harder for players to manage, contributing to a fragmented user experience.

Upcoming Changes and Expectations

To stabilize the Xbox Series X and S as a healthy base, Xbox aims to offer flexible pricing and grow its portfolio of beloved franchises. Microsoft also plans to expand into China and other emerging markets, targeting mobile-first audiences. Notably, this year’s Call of Duty, rumored to be Modern Warfare 4, will not launch day-one in Game Pass, which may affect its sales potential.

Looking Ahead

Despite these changes, Microsoft predicts a continued decline in revenue, particularly in Xbox content and services, partly due to the recent Game Pass price cut. The company anticipates hardware revenue will also decline further. As Project Helix approaches, which aims to play both PC and console games, the future remains uncertain.
