Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection was recently released on Steam Deck, but fans were dismayed to discover that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater were not working properly. The games would crash whenever a cinematic cutscene was triggered.
Fortunately, a community fix has been found. The fix involves copying a missing audio DLL file from a Windows PC to the Steam Deck and adding a launch option to both Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3.
Here’s how to fix Metal Gear Solid Master Collection on Steam Deck:
- On a Windows PC, go to the [OS Drive Letter]:Windows\System32 folder and find the “XAudio2_9.dll” file.
- Copy the “XAudio2_9.dll” file to a storage device.
- Connect the storage device to your Steam Deck.
- Boot your Steam Deck in Desktop mode.
- Open Steam and right-click on Metal Gear Solid 2 and select “Properties”.
- Go to the “Installed Files” tab and click “Browse”.
- Paste the “XAudio2_9.dll” file into the game folder containing your .exe files.
- Close the window.
- Repeat steps 5-7 for Metal Gear Solid 3.
- Right-click on Metal Gear Solid 2 and select “Properties” again.
- Go to the “General” tab and paste the following into the “Launch Options” box: WINEDLLOVERRIDES=“xaudio2_9=n” %command%
- Click “OK”.
- Repeat step 12 for Metal Gear Solid 3.
- You should now be able to launch Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 without crashing during cutscenes.
Additional Notes:
- The PC ports for Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 are still not perfect, and it’s likely that additional fixes will need to be made in the future.
- If you continue to have problems with the games, you can try searching for other community fixes online.
Final Thoughts:
It’s great that a community fix has been found for Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 on Steam Deck. However, it’s still unfortunate that the games were not working properly out of the box. Hopefully, Konami will release a patch to fix the games officially.
