A Bold Move for Superman

Superman has never been more powerful — but will video games forever be his Kryptonite? Warner Bros. and DC hope the answer lies in scale rather than traditional consoles. On April 18, also known as Superman Day in dorky circles, WB will launch the Superman Experience: Defenders Unite, a new “walkthrough experience and live gameplay attraction” built on the WB lot in Burbank, California.

Defenders Unite allows guests to unlock and hone their superpowers, work as a team, and enjoy the illusion of flying alongside Superman through next-generation motion capture technology, active 3D glasses, and high-definition audio. Guests will also have their scores logged while training and fighting to ensure there's a winner who can indulge in some friendly bragging at the end.

This new attraction aligns with the trend of gamified rides, following in the footsteps of Disneyland's Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and California Adventure’s Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure. With Warner Bros. only having a theme park presence in Abu Dhabi, it makes sense for them to leverage the studio's Burbank lot for this pop-up park experience that capitalizes on the latest in ride tech.

Under the guidance of new DC Studios head James Gunn, the recently released Superman film has rejuvenated interest in the character, grossing well enough to secure a sequel. David Corenswet's portrayal of Clark Kent will also feature in the upcoming Supergirl spinoff, expanding the broader DC Universe. Despite the industry's ups and downs, Superman remains a dominant figure in comics, cartoons, and merchandise.

The uncertainty lies in whether Warner Bros. has created something genuinely engaging or if they rushed to compete with Netflix's offerings. Producing a worthwhile experience for Superman in the gaming space is a significant risk but one that might pay off. Many still remember the disappointment of Superman 64, and that bitter taste lingers.

Fan enthusiasm for a well-executed Superman game has been palpable, as shown in numerous Unreal Engine fan videos that have imagined a third-person Superman experience. “If this was done by one person I can’t imagine what a whole studio can do,” one YouTube commenter said, reflecting the excitement and potential surrounding the character.

WB developed Defenders Unite with New Peak Interactive, known for the Harry Potter Magic Caster Wand. The Superman Experience isn't just about the main attraction; visitors can also enjoy a Doghouse of Solitude minigame that involves playing catch with Krypto and a two-player puzzle game where guests can activate the Phantom Zone Projector. While the main event pits Gunn’s version of Superman against the formidable Darkseid, it's still uncertain whether this experience will resonate with fans.

The Superman Experience opens on April 18, with tickets currently available for purchase. As anticipation builds, the gaming community waits to see if WB can finally break the curse and deliver a Superman experience that lives up to the hero's legacy.
