Community Discontent Following Launch

Pokémon Champions launched last night on the Switch, aiming to revolutionize competitive Pokémon play. However, within hours, a wave of criticism emerged from the community, labeling the game a disappointing venture. Even casual players are surprised by the limitations imposed on what has usually been a flexible competitive experience.

Players have noted significant restrictions in the Pokémon roster. Champions only supports fully evolved Pokémon, aside from Pikachu, with just 186 monsters available from across nine generations at launch. Many expected a richer offering in a game branded as the future of competitive play.

Joe Merrick, a prominent figure in the Pokémon community, expressed frustration, stating, "VGC should be on Scarlet & Violet until Winds & Waves is out." This sentiment reflects a broader disappointment with the current state of Champions.

Adding to the confusion, some Pokémon that trailers hinted would have Mega Evolutions are unable to access them due to missing held items. Players were particularly let down by Raichu, which was featured in promotional materials but cannot achieve its Mega form in the game.

Issues extend beyond roster limitations. Players are also facing restrictions in battle formats. For example, even in private matches, players cannot engage in full 6v6 battles, instead limited to three Pokémon in singles or four in doubles. This constriction feels counterproductive for a game designed for competitive play.

Moreover, the team-building process has proven to be a grind. Players must gather Victory Points through ranked matches to unlock stats and move changes, making it cumbersome to prepare even one Pokémon for battle. As it stands, many players are frustrated with the unyielding grind required to create teams.

Despite the initial backlash, there remains hope for improvements in future updates. However, Champions has not made a strong first impression, with players feeling forced to adapt to a platform that seems unprepared for the competitive scene.
