Iron Galaxy Announces Layoffs

Iron Galaxy, the Chicago-based game company, is laying off dozens of employees in a bid for survival. The move comes after the studio shipped the remaster collection of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 to positive reviews. Reports indicate that up to 90 employees could be affected by these layoffs, highlighting the ongoing struggles within the industry.

Impact of Industry Changes

The company stated, "Ever since 2020, when everything about making video games started to change, people have been waiting for business ‘to get back to normal." This shift in the gaming landscape has forced Iron Galaxy to reconsider its operational structure. They noted that players consume games in new ways, leading to altered investment criteria from publishers and a challenging environment for developers.

Company's History and Recent Struggles

Founded in 2008, Iron Galaxy has supported major franchises like Killer Instinct and the Batman: Arkham series. In 2022, they launched their original IP Rumbleverse, which unfortunately went offline within a year. Despite these setbacks, the studio had managed to avoid layoffs until early 2025, when they had to reduce their workforce by 66 people.

Response to Layoffs

In their announcement, Iron Galaxy expressed regret over the decision, stating, "Today, Iron Galaxy is parting ways with some of our developers and support staff." They emphasized that this was a last resort to ensure long-term survival. The studio faced mounting pressure as console gaming stagnated and hit titles became increasingly difficult to produce.

Looking Ahead

Iron Galaxy's leadership acknowledged the need for evolution in response to the changing market. They stated, "It’s time for us to evolve again," indicating a commitment to adapt and find new paths forward in the industry.
