Top-down action shooter released in 1999 by DMA Design
Rockstar Games officially divides the Grand Theft Auto series into three unrelated eras: the 2D era, the 3D era, and the HD era that includes Grand Theft Auto 6. Each game functions as a self-contained story about self-actualization from a blank slate, meaning players can jump into the next entry without any prior knowledge.
Grand Theft Auto 2 refined the original's clunky mechanics with saving, a health bar, and smoother driving, but its retro-futuristic setting and caricature-like vehicles create an identity crisis. The game improves technically yet lacks the charm of Liberty City or Vice City.
