About PokéNational Geographic
PokéNational Geographic is a YouTube series created by Elios, known for its fantastic shorts that depict the world of Pokémon as a nature documentary would. The series debuted in 2023, quickly gaining popularity for its bespoke clay-like visuals and detailed descriptions of how Pokémon species might exist in the wild.
Nintendo's Copyright Strikes
On April 26, Elios revealed that Nintendo has filed numerous copyright strikes against his channel, forcing him to shut it down. Currently, PokéNational Geographic has exceeded three strikes, which according to YouTube, prevents the channel from remaining active. Elios expressed his frustration, stating, "I can't really fight this," highlighting the overwhelming power of copyright enforcement against independent creators.
The strikes reportedly stem from Elios' use of Pokémon video games' "works, characters, and imagery," despite most of the content being his original creations. While he samples in-game cries of Pokémon, each audio clip is under three seconds, which Elios believes falls under fair use. However, the lack of opportunity to delete the offending videos has left him feeling helpless.
The Impact of PokéNational
Elios emphasized the significance of PokéNational, noting, "I've gotten internships, I've gotten jobs because of PokéNational, because I showed people my animation skills through that." His work also popularized a genre of Pokémon documentary videos, influencing many other creators. Despite his contributions, the channel's future looks grim, as Elios shared his uncertainty: "I don't know how to save the channel, I don't know if I can."
What Lies Ahead
Although Elios plans to continue creating art on a separate channel, it will no longer focus on Pokémon. He confirmed, "PokéNational is dead," marking a significant loss for both him and the Pokémon content community. As YouTube and Nintendo remain silent on the matter, the situation raises questions about copyright enforcement and its impact on creative expression in gaming.
