Diminishing Returns and Sony’s Cut
Hard sales data is often elusive in the gaming industry. However, new estimates from Alinea Analytics reveal that Microsoft exclusives ported to PlayStation 5 have seen significant success, particularly with Forza Horizon 5, which sold 5.8 million copies. This highlights a notable shift as more Xbox titles make their way to rival platforms.
The list published by Alinea Analytics includes 13 games that have each sold over 100,000 copies on PS5 since their release. These estimates focus on the financial viability of Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy, revealing that collectively, these titles have generated $667 million in gross revenue for Microsoft, including Sony’s cut.
Among the top performers, multiplayer titles like Sea of Thieves and Grounded have thrived, thanks to cross-play features that attract PS5 players. The success of Forza Horizon 5 solidifies it as Xbox’s most popular franchise, while other titles like Starfield underperform relative to expectations.
The data raises questions about the effectiveness of Microsoft’s strategy. Are diminishing returns on sales inevitable? As the novelty of Xbox exclusives on PlayStation fades, the potential financial benefits of this approach might not be as lucrative as initially thought.
