Unionisation Efforts at Wizards of the Coast

Developers at Wizards of the Coast are set to unionise with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The CWA reports that they’ve secured a supermajority in favour of unionisation among the workers, demanding recognition of the union, dubbed United Wizards of the Coast—CWA, by May 1st. This movement gained momentum following mass layoffs at Hasbro in 2023, which ignited concerns about job security and workplace conditions.

The union's goals include better protections against layoffs, changes to remote working policies, regulations on the use of generative AI, and addressing mandatory crunch periods. The developers also seek to increase transparency and equity in their workplace, aiming for a more sustainable work environment.

Voices from the Union

Damien Wilson, a senior software development engineer and union member, expressed the urgency of their cause: "At Wizards, we’re organizing for a say in layoffs, accountability that runs up and down the chain, and a living wage that actually lets people build a life." He highlighted that this effort is not just about Wizards of the Coast but reflects a broader issue in American workplaces, where profit often outweighs the well-being of employees. Wilson added, "This isn’t just something that affects Wizards of the Coast; it’s how most American workplaces are set up: investor profit above all, even if it hurts those behind the products we all know and love."

In conversations with Kotaku, senior software engineers Valentine Powell and Neil White reiterated that the recent layoffs sparked their push for unionisation, along with dissatisfaction regarding remote work policies. They encourage anyone interested to support their efforts by signing a public petition demanding that management voluntarily recognise the union.
