Recently, a YouTuber discovered a new expiration date for digital PlayStation games, sparking concerns about players being locked out of their purchases without regular online checks. This confusion echoed the backlash against Xbox's poorly received digital DRM plans during the Xbox One launch. Sony has now provided clarity on the situation.
A spokesperson for Sony stated, "Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual." The company confirmed that a one-time online check is required to verify the game’s license, after which no further check-ins are necessary. This means players won’t need to maintain a constant internet connection to enjoy their digital titles.
The Impact of Temporary Licenses
New purchases will now come with a temporary license that must be authenticated at some point. This authentication process converts the temporary license into a permanent one, ensuring users retain access to their games. The introduction of this temporary license adds an additional layer of DRM, which has raised concerns among players about potential restrictions.
Clemens Istel, owner of DoesItPlay, noted, "The way we understand it currently is that there was an additional layer of DRM introduced to combat fraudulent behaviour from users." This change may also relate to recent issues such as a refund scam and an exploit linked to the Star Wars Racer game, although Sony's statement did not confirm the reasons behind the updated measures.
