The Origin of Wonder Man
Comic book filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton initially pitched Wonder Man as a 'joke pitch' during his time on the set of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Cretton expressed his admiration for Kingsley’s character, stating, "The genesis of the idea actually sprouted when we were on the set of Shang Chi and I just loved working with Sir Ben [Kingsley, as Trevor Slattery] and I really loved his character and I really feel like in every movie Trevor Slattery has been such a standout and under utilized." This light-hearted approach eventually gained traction, leading to the show's creation.
His original concept evolved when he shared the idea with producer Jonathan Schwartz, who humorously suggested a poster for the show titled 'Trevor Goes To Hollywood.' Cretton remarked, "So I did a joke pitch to my producer Jonathan Schwartz and said 'We should do Trevor Goes To Hollywood.'" This playful idea transitioned into a serious project, resulting in a unique MCU narrative.
What to Expect from Wonder Man
The narrative focuses on Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery navigating the Hollywood scene, stepping away from the typical superhero tropes. While other MCU shows like Loki and Hawkeye have focused on more action-driven plots, Wonder Man provides a refreshing change of pace, allowing character development and humor to take center stage. As Cretton noted, this was a risk creatively for Marvel, especially during a time of industry strikes, but it paid off with the announcement of a second season.
