Release Date and Early Access Details

After a long and publicly messy pre-launch period, Subnautica 2 finally has a firm release date. The underwater survival sim will launch into early access on May 14 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, developer Unknown Worlds announced Thursday. This highly anticipated title is set to immerse players in underwater exploration once again, much like its predecessors, 2018's Subnautica and 2021's Subnautica: Below Zero.

Multiplayer Features

One of the standout features in Subnautica 2 is its multiplayer capability, which allows up to four players to explore together. According to game design lead Anthony Gallegos, "Co-op [will] help the game have an identity that feels very distinct." This addition marks a significant shift from previous entries in the franchise, enhancing the overall player experience as friends can now dive into the depths together.

Background on Legal Disputes

The announcement follows a drawn-out legal dispute between Unknown Worlds and its publisher Krafton. Originally slated for a late 2024 release, things took a turn in July 2025 when Krafton delayed the early access release and terminated key executives at Unknown Worlds, leading to a legal battle over a potential $250 million payout. The situation escalated until March of this year when a judge ordered Krafton to rehire CEO Ted Gill, which they did before confirming the May release window.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

Despite the tumultuous legal backdrop, Gallegos confirmed that Krafton remains involved with the project, stating, "We're co-publishing it together." This collaboration aims to ensure that Subnautica 2 is polished and engaging. Moreover, Unknown Worlds plans to involve the community in the development process during the early access phase, incorporating player feedback throughout, similar to their approach with previous titles.

Looking Ahead

Subnautica 2 is projected to stay in early access for two to three years before reaching a full 1.0 launch. Players can expect a rich underwater world filled with new creatures and environments, further enhancing the survival experience. The only thing holding you back is your own fear of going deeper.
