Supply Constraints and Popularity

During the Q&A section of the company's Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the MacBook Neo is currently facing supply constraints. He noted, "We were very bullish on the product before announcing it. But we undercalled the level of enthusiasm." This unexpected demand highlights the product's resonance with consumers, driving Apple to aim for a production target of 10 million units.

Cook emphasized that the company's focus is on "getting the Mac to even more people than we were reaching before." This strategy targets not only new users but also those switching from aging devices, such as the Kansas City Public Schools moving away from Chromebooks and Windows PCs. The popularity of the Neo appears to be a bright spot for Apple, as Cook stated, "we could not be happier with how things are going at the moment."

Financial Outlook and Memory Costs

Despite the strong demand, Apple faces challenges related to memory costs that are impacting its overall performance. Cook explained, "In the December quarter, we really had a minimal impact due to memory, and you can kind of see that in the gross margin results." He noted that the March quarter saw an increase in memory costs, which were partially offset by the benefits of carry-in inventory.

Looking ahead, Cook projected, "For the June quarter... we expect significantly higher memory costs. They are also partly offset by the benefit of carry-in inventory." He further indicated that beyond the June quarter, memory costs would continue to impact the business. This suggests that while the Neo's launch is strong, Apple must navigate ongoing industry challenges.
