About Final Fantasy XIV
Developed by Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIV continues to be a beloved MMORPG since its relaunch in 2013. The game is gearing up for its next expansion, titled Evercold, slated for release in January 2027.
AI Art Controversy at Fan Festival
During the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 held in Anaheim, California, localizer Christopher Koji Fox faced backlash for his use of AI-generated art in his panel titled "From Tacos to Tenders: Serving up the Lyrics of FFXIV." The panel featured AI-generated images and videos that many fans found disappointing. Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming expansion, Fox's presentation dampened the mood, with the audience's reaction shifting from laughter to audible groans of disgust.
Fox explained his decision to use AI art, stating, "Due to time constraints, I wasnโt able to get permission to use official photos." This admission did little to quell the discontent among fans who felt that AI-generated content detracted from the creative essence of the game. Specific examples included the use of an AI-generated music video and an image of the artists behind the game's soundtrack.
Critics on social media expressed their frustration, with one user commenting, "Koji Fox speedruns the death of his good standing with the community." Another remarked on the six months of goodwill he seemingly squandered by incorporating AI into his work. This sentiment highlights the disconnect between the community's expectations and the use of AI technology in content creation.
Square Enix's AI Strategy
Adding fuel to the fire, Square Enix's president, Takashi Kiryu, has made statements regarding the company's plans to utilize AI aggressively in development and publishing. Kiryu noted, "We also intend to be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions." This strategy aims to enhance productivity and create new forms of content, but it has raised concerns among fans about the impact on the creative process.
