About Shuhei Yoshida
Shuhei Yoshida, a prominent figure in the gaming industry, served as the leader of Sony's first-party PlayStation Worldwide Studios for 11 years. In 2019, he was fired by Jim Ryan, who had recently taken over as head of PlayStation. Following this change, Yoshida transitioned to a new role focused on developing PlayStation's indie catalogue.
Details of the Firing
During a talk at the Australian games event Alt: Games, Yoshida explained the circumstances surrounding his departure from first-party development. "Jim Ryan wanted to remove me from first-party because I didn't listen to him," Yoshida said, highlighting that he resisted requests he deemed unreasonable. Their long-standing friendship, dating back to the PS1 era, complicated the situation, as Yoshida remarked, "you don't want to have one of your friends as one of your subordinates."
Yoshida's New Role and Contributions
After his firing, Yoshida took on a new position where he focused on promoting indie games. He expressed satisfaction with this role, stating, "I really enjoyed the role of promoting and evangelising indie games." This shift allowed him to work closely with indie developers and help them find a place within the PlayStation ecosystem.
Changes in Leadership
Jim Ryan appointed Herman Hulst, the head of Guerrilla Games, to take over Yoshida's previous responsibilities. Under Ryan's leadership, PlayStation Worldwide Studios was restructured and rebranded as PlayStation Studios, expanding its portfolio significantly. The studio acquired several key developers, including Insomniac Games, Housemarque, Bungie, and Bluepoint, further enhancing PlayStation's offerings in the market.
Looking Ahead
Yoshida left PlayStation in 2025 and now runs his own indie game consulting firm, Yosp Inc. This independence allows him to freely discuss and evaluate other platforms, including Nintendo and Xbox. Jim Ryan's departure from Sony in March 2024 marks another significant change for the company, as it continues to evolve under new leadership.
