Fan Restoration of CGI Renders
With the source code for Silent Hill 2 lost, a dedicated fan known as Rashmunchel has taken on the task of restoring the game’s CGI renders. This effort aims to preserve the high-quality CGI art created by Takayoshi Sato, which played a significant role in the game's impact upon release. Rashmunchel expressed their motivation, stating, "I wanted to preserve what's left of SH2's CGI art because the CGI models, cutscenes in high quality and the game's entire source code has been lost."
The restoration project includes upscaling various CGI assets, from model renders to animation frames. One particularly challenging piece involved a closeup of protagonist James Sunderland, which Rashmunchel noted "took forever to restore because I had to work with a very low-quality closeup." This meticulous work highlights the dedication to maintaining the essence of the original game.
Use of AI in the Restoration Process
Rashmunchel has utilized generative AI to assist in upscaling the images, acknowledging that many of the original files are small and of low quality. However, they also manually edit these images in Photoshop to minimize the 'AI' look, which they dislike. "AI by itself doesn't do a good job. There are always imperfections and that 'AI' look, which I hate," Rashmunchel explained. This hands-on approach demonstrates a commitment to quality and authenticity, even while leveraging modern technology.
