Amazon's Long-Term Vision

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to run for five seasons, with Amazon reportedly committed to maintaining its ambitious vision for the series. A recent report from Lesley Goldberg in The Ankler reveals that the show, which is said to be television's first $1 billion series, remains under the protective influence of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Despite the enormous production and marketing costs associated with the visual effects-heavy fantasy series, Bezos’s support appears unwavering. A source quoted in the report stated, "That’s still under Bezos’ magical halo. That’s protected for its run." This insight suggests that Amazon is willing to endure significant financial burdens to ensure the series sees its full intended arc.

Upcoming Seasons and Production Insights

Although The Rings of Power is still awaiting a release date for its third season, the report indicates that Amazon's initial five-season commitment is still intact. Amazon TV head Peter Friedlander has reportedly visited the show's set and assured creatives that they will have the opportunity to complete their story, although there remains some uncertainty about whether the narrative will conclude in four or five seasons.

Season 3 is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2026. However, plans for any spinoffs appear to have been shelved, according to sources.

Production Costs and Challenges

In 2018, Amazon secured a $250 million rights deal with the Tolkien estate, which included a commitment to produce the series over five seasons. Despite this promising start, concerns about the show's future have arisen, particularly regarding its substantial production costs and viewership metrics. The Ankler previously highlighted that each episode in the first season cost around $20 million, with total expenses exceeding $465 million, not accounting for the initial rights fee and marketing expenses.
