An Ubisoft spokesperson provided insight into this decision, stating, "As part of our portfolio management approach and evolving creative house-led model, we continuously assess projects at every stage of development to ensure alignment with our strategic priorities, quality ambitions, and long-term market potential. Projects that no longer meet these expectations may be discontinued." This reflects a broader strategy within Ubisoft to focus on projects that align better with their overall goals.
Game Features
Despite its cancellation, Alterra was set to feature several engaging mechanics. Players would have enjoyed social mechanics that encouraged interaction, alongside crafting and gathering systems that are staples in the genre. Exploration of different biomes would allow players to discover various materials and creatures, enhancing the immersive experience. NPCs called Matterlings were designed to resemble Funko Pops, adding a quirky charm to the game.

Patrick Redding served as the creative director for Alterra, bringing experience from his work on Splinter Cell Blacklist and the Far Cry series.
