About the Original PlayStation

Released 32 years ago, the original PlayStation, model SCPH-5502, remains a nostalgic gem for many gamers. This console marked Sony's entry into the gaming market and featured a library of iconic titles. Despite its age, enthusiasts continue to find ways to modernize the hardware for contemporary use.

Key Features of the Mod Project

A new mod project aims to bring the original PlayStation up to date with significant upgrades. The project introduces HDMI output, allowing players to connect the console to modern displays. This mod converts the PlayStation's original 480p output to 1080p, enhancing the visual experience without adding extra cables.

Another notable feature is USB power support, enabling the console to be powered via a USB-C connection. This upgrade simplifies the power requirements and improves convenience for users. Additionally, the mod introduces wireless controller support, allowing gamers to use modern controllers, such as the PS5's DualSense, with the classic console.

The Modding Process

Elliot Coll, from the YouTube channel The Retro Future, showcases the modding process in detail. He first disassembles a well-worn SCPH-5502 unit, revealing previous modifications. He likens the discovery of past mod work to finding "a fossil-rich strata in sedimentary rock." This emphasizes the historical significance of hardware modifications.

Coll uses a new component called the PicoStation ZeroWire, which simplifies the soldering process required for the mod. This device allows games to be launched from an SD card using a Raspberry Pi Pico. Although it still requires soldering, Elliot notes that this method is much more efficient than older approaches, like folding the motherboard in half as seen in other handheld PS1 projects.
