Transitioning from MMO to Singleplayer RPG
Book of Travels, developed by Might & Delight, has announced it will convert from a struggling MMO into a singleplayer RPG, priced at just $4.99. This change comes as the servers will be shut down on July 31, 2023, marking a significant pivot for a game that has faced numerous challenges since its early access launch. Fans have long cherished its artistic influences, featuring enchanting landscapes and a unique atmosphere, but the game's ambitions have often been out of reach.
Might & Delight recently stated, "We know that we have not communicated anything in a while and that this has, rightfully so, caused frustration." The developers acknowledged the difficulties they encountered while trying to bring the game to life, admitting they took on more than they could handle. They expressed regret for the lack of communication and for not fulfilling their initial promises to the community.
Game Features and Changes
The new offline version maintains the essence of the game while introducing changes to enhance solo gameplay. Players can now enjoy the Trainmaster's Stash with unlimited space and have reduced requirements for Endeavours, which are essentially skill checks. Additionally, the base inventory volume has been increased, creating a more accommodating experience for players engaging with the game's rich environments.
Might & Delight has also embraced the modding community, allowing any mods for Book of Travels. They announced their intention to collaborate with modders through the creation of a dedicated Discord channel to facilitate discussions. This move reflects the developers' commitment to maintaining the game's longevity in its new singleplayer format.
Acknowledging the Journey
With this transition, Book of Travels officially ends its run in early access, and the developers have reduced the price from $29.99 to $4.99. The team acknowledged their disappointment, stating, "We are truly sad that this project didn't become all that we wanted it to be." They hope that this new direction allows the game to reach its potential and remain playable for fans moving forward.
Many players, including past supporters, have expressed a sense of relief with the shift. The promise of engaging with the game's beautifully crafted landscapes in a singleplayer capacity resonates more strongly with some fans who felt the MMO aspect fell short. As players look forward to exploring these huge environments at a reduced price, the hope is that Book of Travels can continue to foster an audience and possibly revisit some of the features originally planned for the online experience.
