Gaming enthusiasts have always been curious about potential content that never saw the light of day in their favorite titles. One such revelation recently came to light regarding Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where hackers stumbled upon remnants of the classic Spider-Man antagonist, Doctor Octopus, suggesting he was initially intended to be a playable character.

The Unexpected Discovery of a Classic Villain

Doctor Octopus stands as one of Spider-Man's most formidable foes and has cemented his status in the lore over the years. Therefore, it's always a surprise when he's missing from a Spider-Man inclusive game, such as Capcom's renowned crossover fighting series, Marvel vs. Capcom.

Spider-Man, without a doubt, has graced every iteration of the Marvel vs. Capcom series, but Doctor Octopus remained conspicuously absent. Ryota Niitsuma, the game's producer, had initially intended to introduce this notorious adversary into the third installment. However, he was left out, presumably due to challenges related to his unique robotic tentacles and the devastating 2011 Tsunami that resulted in significant data losses. Yet, rumors persisted that fragments of Doc Ock's data persisted within Marvel vs. Capcom 3's disc, a theory recently validated by the discovery of an early game build.

Corroborating the Rumors

Renowned modder, Xeno, took to Twitter to unveil their findings from an early Xbox 360 build of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The extracted content not only displayed a plethora of omitted elements but also substantiated several speculations regarding the game. Notably, there was a distinct character portrait and user interface elements tailored for Doctor Octopus. Analyzing the portrait revealed that his envisioned appearance for MvC3 drew inspiration from his quintessential comic book depiction, characterized by a bowl cut, yellow attire, and distinctive blue sunglasses.

Further confirmation arrived in the form of assets related to Frank West, another character who was almost omitted, but eventually found a spot in the game's Ultimate version. The uncovered early build also showcased an under-development stage, some incomplete music scores, and a collection of unused dialogue lines.
