The team behind Skyblivion, an ambitious fan-made mod that aims to recreate The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using the engine and mechanics of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has unveiled a new gameplay trailer. This update highlights the impressive progress made on the project, which is currently slated for a 2025 release. Skyblivion will require players to own Skyrim but will be available as a free download.
A Decade in the Making
Skyblivion began in 2012 as a project to port content from Oblivion into the more advanced Skyrim engine. Over time, it has evolved into a full-fledged "remaster" of the original game, adapting and updating Oblivion's content to fit Skyrim's more modern systems. The goal is to allow players familiar with Skyrim to experience Oblivion, the game that significantly expanded the Elder Scrolls franchise's popularity, with enhanced visuals and gameplay mechanics.
If successful, Skyblivion is poised to become one of the most expansive and comprehensive Skyrim mods ever created.
A Glimpse into the Project
The latest Skyblivion gameplay trailer, nearly 20 minutes long, showcases the scale of the team's efforts. The trailer focuses on two notable quests from the original Oblivion: "Fingers of the Mountain" and "The Killing Field." Both quests are set in the city of Chorrol, located in the densely forested northwest region of Cyrodiil, and are popular early-game destinations.
Fingers of the Mountain: This quest is part of the Mages Guild storyline in Oblivion. The trailer shows the player character visiting a mountaintop ruin at the request of the Chorrol Mages Guild, seeking a powerful book. The gameplay demonstrates combat mechanics that incorporate Skyrim-exclusive features such as enhanced melee blocking, counterattacks, cinematic kills, and the ability to dual-wield magic and weapons. For instance, the player can wield the unique Finger of the Mountain spell in one hand while holding a weapon in the other.
The Killing Field: This quest, which involves defending a farm from goblins, highlights Skyblivion's enhanced reactivity. The remastered version of the quest features changes to the farm based on the player's actions during the quest, offering a more dynamic and responsive gameplay experience compared to the original Oblivion.
Looking Forward to 2025
While the 2025 target release window is still a ways off, the latest trailer suggests that Skyblivion is shaping up to be an impressive recreation of one of the most beloved RPGs of all time. For fans of The Elder Scrolls, Skyblivion offers an exciting opportunity to revisit Oblivion with modern enhancements while waiting for more news on The Elder Scrolls VI.
Skyblivion's development continues to generate excitement, and as the project progresses, it promises to deliver a nostalgic yet refreshed experience for both old and new fans of the Elder Scrolls series.
