Modernizing Mii Avatars
When the Nintendo Wii introduced Mii avatars 20 years ago, players embraced their simplistic charm. Since then, despite advances in graphics, Miis have largely remained unchanged. However, for the upcoming Switch title Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream, Nintendo considered a more sophisticated approach to these iconic characters.
In the new game, players will create and manage a vibrant island filled with customized Mii residents who engage in humorous and unexpected scenarios. Given that the last iteration of Tomodachi Life appeared on the 3DS, developers saw an opportunity to modernize the Mii, enhancing their graphics and interactions.
“But after adding all sorts of new elements to the Mii characters, something began to feel ... off,” said Ryutaro Takahashi, the game director. The team soon realized that Miis hold sentimental value for fans. Many players still use avatars they designed years ago, often recreating friends and family with each console upgrade.
Daisuke Kageyama, the art director, emphasized this emotional connection: “Since the characters are filled with the emotions of many people, I didn’t think we should randomly alter their design just because the resolution had increased.”
Initial ideas included changing Mii facial features, movements, and even the types of voices they used. Sound director Toru Minegishi shared that while they explored more realistic voices, doing so would compromise the unique charm of the Mii. “If we express that realism too directly, it doesn’t sound like a Mii character anymore,” he explained, noting that he intentionally processed voices to maintain the robotic quality.
Furthermore, the movement and behavior of the avatars underwent scrutiny. The team exaggerated Mii animations to preserve the playful essence that fans have come to expect. Kageyama noted, “We updated their appearance based on a simple, anime-inspired toon-style, allowing players to immerse themselves in the drama between Mii characters in cutscenes.” This approach aligns with the original vision for Mii characters as seen on early Tomodachi Life packaging.
Despite these updates, Takahashi reassured fans that the core gameplay remains unchanged. “The whole appeal of the game is that Mii characters act of their own accord, resulting in outcomes the player doesn’t expect.” Preserving this element of surprise is key to maintaining the series' charm.
