Change in Helm: Creative Director Elisabeth Pellen’s Departure

Elisabeth Pellen, who has been steering the "Skull and Bones" project as the creative director since 2018, has reportedly left Ubisoft Singapore. Pellen embarked on her journey with the team with the mission to revamp the game’s creative direction, which she successfully achieved by transitioning it from a session-based multiplayer ship combat shooter to a more intricate exploration and survival-oriented piracy simulator. This shift drew inspiration from popular games such as Rust and Ark: Survival Evolved.

Pellen's tenure at Ubisoft Singapore was marked by her efforts to inject fresh and innovative ideas into the game, leveraging her extensive experience as a VP of editorial at Ubisoft's central department, responsible for overseeing franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and The Division. Now returning to Ubisoft's Paris headquarters, she assumes the role of directeur editorial online, as stated on her LinkedIn profile.

According to a spokesperson from Ubisoft, Pellen had managed to fulfill her mission of rejuvenating "Skull and Bones", setting the stage for a unique naval action RPG experience for the players. Despite this, her departure comes at a time when she was expected to continue at least until the end of the year, as mentioned by sources familiar with the situation. As of now, Pellen has not responded to requests for comments.

Unveiling the Production Woes

Initially conceived as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, "Skull and Bones" was originally slated for release in 2018. However, it encountered numerous delays due to a soft reboot and an escalated vision for the game. Although it was nearly prepared for a Fall 2022 release, it was withdrawn at the last moment owing to concerns regarding the game's polish and feedback received from playtests.
