After four years as a PC-exclusive title, Riot Games' Valorant has made a grand entrance into the console arena, launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. This strategic expansion follows a successful console beta phase last month, marking a significant milestone for the popular online first-person shooter (FPS).

Distinguishing Valorant from Other Hero Shooters

Despite the crowded market of free-to-play shooters, including numerous hero shooters like Overwatch, Valorant sets itself apart by offering a different kind of experience. In an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, Arnar Hrafn Gylfason, Riot Games' director of production and product lead for Valorant, emphasized that Valorant should not be categorized merely as a hero shooter. "We don't think of [Valorant] as a hero shooter," Gylfason stated, highlighting the unique position of Valorant in the competitive gaming landscape.

Gylfason further explained, "At the core, we are a very serious, fairly sweaty, competitive, tactical shooter." This philosophy has guided the development and adaptation of Valorant for the console market, ensuring it remains true to its roots while potentially attracting a new audience.

Valorant vs. Marvel Rivals and Concord

As Valorant launches on consoles, it coincides with the beta phases of other anticipated games like Marvel Rivals and Concord. However, Gylfason views these games not as direct competitors but as different offerings within the broad spectrum of the gaming world. "I think [Valorant] scratches a different itch than the kind of hero action shooters that we've been seeing in this space for the past few years," he mentioned.

This perspective is reflective of Riot's approach to game development—focusing on fulfilling specific player motivations and needs rather than directly competing with every new entry into the genre.
