As BioWare's highly anticipated RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, approaches its Fall 2024 release, fans are eager to learn more about the changes coming to the beloved series. One significant shift is the reduced level of control players will have over their companions during combat, a move that has sparked discussion among the series' dedicated fanbase.

A Shift in Combat Dynamics

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Corinne Busche, the game director for The Veilguard, explained the reasoning behind this design choice. The latest installment in the Dragon Age series is described as a "much higher actions-per-minute game," making it more technically demanding on players. According to Busche, allowing full control of companions alongside managing the player’s own character detracted from the overall experience.

"When we tried allowing you full control of your companions as well, what we've found is it wasn't actually adding to the experience. In fact, in some ways it was detrimental," Busche stated. The complexity of managing multiple characters in real-time combat proved to be overwhelming, potentially diminishing player engagement.

Enhancing Role-Playing Immersion

Beyond the technical aspects, BioWare also considered the impact on role-playing. The development team wanted players to feel fully immersed in the role of the protagonist, known as Rook. By limiting direct control over companions, BioWare aims to make these characters feel more autonomous and alive, acting based on their own personalities and decisions rather than simply following player commands.

Busche emphasized that this approach helps reinforce the sense that players are truly embodying their character within the game world. "We wanted the companions to feel like they, as fully realized characters, are in control of their own actions. They make their own decisions," she explained.
